Homemade Bagels Recipe
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F or 45°C)
- 2 tablespoons barley malt syrup or honey (optional, for boiling)
- Toppings: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, everything bagel seasoning, sea salt (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
2. Shape the Bagels
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
- Roll each piece into a ball and then poke a hole through the center with your finger, stretching it to form a ring.
3. Boil the Bagels
- In a large pot, bring about 2 quarts of water to a boil. (You can add the barley malt syrup or honey for flavor.)
- Carefully drop a few bagels into the boiling water, cooking for about 1-2 minutes on each side.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the bagels and let them drain on a wire rack.
4. Bake the Bagels
- Place the boiled bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- If desired, sprinkle toppings on top before baking.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
5. Cool and Serve
- Once baked, remove the bagels from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
- Enjoy your homemade bagels fresh or toasted with your favorite spreads!
Tips
- Store bagels in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
- Experiment with different toppings and flavors by adding herbs or spices to the dough before kneading!
